Villaputzu is a municipality in the province of Cagliari, from which it is 65 km away, with about 5,000 inhabitants, located in the Sarrabus region.
The town is part of the Ogliastra diocese, and is located on a short flat stretch created by alluvial deposits from the mouth of the Flumendosa river.
It is considered by many to be the home of the launeddas, as it has counted among its citizens the greatest masters of the past, and still boasts young but important players.
The culinary heritage of Villaputzu is interesting, with ‘is Culirgionis’, ‘is Malloreddus’, meat and fish roasts and typical sweets such as ‘is Pardulas’, ‘is Pabassinas’ and macaroons. The sweet citrus fruits renowned throughout Sardinia deserve special mention.
In October, the feasts of Santa Vittoria (2nd Sunday) and San Narciso (4th Sunday) are celebrated here with a procession accompanied by the rhythm of launeddas. On this occasion, improvisers’ poetry competitions, dancing in the square and fireworks displays are held.
