Vallermosa is a municipality in the province of Cagliari of about 2,000 inhabitants, about 44 km from the capital.
The name derives from the Spanish term ‘valle hermosa’, meaning ‘beautiful valley’.
The town is surrounded by a hilly area rich in vegetation and plants typical of Sardinia, with many natural springs and fountains. About 5 km from the town is the natural park of ‘Gutturu Mannu’ (‘Big Gorge’) where you can admire some animal and plant species that are now in danger of extinction. The park is also equipped for picnics and outings, with tables, seating and barbecues.
Vallermosa is also home to important archaeological and nuragic sites, including ‘Matzanni’ and ‘Fanaris’. At the ‘Matzanni’ site, there are three sacred wells, the ruins of a Punic temple, the remains of thirteen huts and a long wall structure.
Inside the village, on the other hand, one can admire the old Campidanese houses made of clay bricks, the typical gates, the church of San Lucifero in the centre of the village and the small Romanesque church with adjoining Roman baths.
