Quartucciu

Quartucciu is a municipality in the province of Cagliari with about 11,500 inhabitants. It was a fraction of Cagliari from 1928 to 1983.

In its territory, one can admire the Tomb of the Giants ‘Sa Domu e s’Orcu’, dating back to the 10th-6th century B.C. It is one of the most important and best-preserved Tombs of the Giants in Sardinia, and is located within the park of Monte dei Sette Fratelli. It has a ‘stylised taurine protome’ layout with a rectangular body slightly tapering towards the bottom. It was used to bury the dead and to celebrate other religious rites, as the three wells to the north of the monument testify.

‘Pill’è Matta’ is another archaeological site from the Punic-Roman period with unique characteristics in Sardinia. It is a necropolis discovered by chance in 2000, during some works in the industrial area of Quartucciu. More than two hundred tombs have been identified so far, and more than two thousand finds have been recovered, including glasses, plates, and oil lamps. The necropolis has been frequented since the Punic period, from the 4th century B.C. to the 5th century A.D., in the late Roman period. For the occasion, a museum exhibition was opened at the ‘Ex Casa Angioni’ cultural centre, displaying over a thousand finds.
