Quartu Sant’Elena is a municipality in the province of Cagliari. With over 70,000 inhabitants, it is the third largest city in Sardinia after Cagliari and Sassari.
The city’s territory includes two-thirds of the Molentargius pond, recognised as one of the most important wetlands in Europe. Some very rare bird species nest here, including the Pink Flamingo, the Avocet, the Black-winged Stilt, the Marsh Harrier and the Sultan Chicken.
In the past, its economy was mainly based on agriculture and pastoralism. In the town, there are two museums on Quartese tradition, ‘Sa Dom’e Farra’ and ‘The Cycle of Life’. ‘Sa Dom’e Farra’ literally means ‘The House of Flour’, the most prized and profitable product of Quarto. The museum ‘The Cycle of Life’ houses around 8,000 objects of daily use, related to the Sardinian tradition from the 18th to the 20th century.
Quartu Sant’Elena hosts numerous events and festivals famous throughout Sardinia. One of the most famous is the ‘Sciampitta’, organised every year in July, with the participation of folk groups from all over the world.
The city can boast a coastline of no less than 26 km of beautiful beaches. The most famous is certainly Poetto, the long beach that stretches all the way to Cagliari, famous for its white sand. It is the most frequented beach by all the citizens of Quartu, Cagliari and the hinterland.
