Muravera is a municipality of about 5,000 inhabitants, 65 km from Cagliari.
It is the most important centre of Sarrabus, famous for its citrus fruit production. This town is also known for its great beaches, especially Costa Rei, with the tourist settlement of the same name. Various interesting archaeological sites can also be visited near the village, in particular the menhirs of Piscina Rei and Cuili Piras.
This tourist centre has also focused on popular handicrafts to produce carpets and textiles made with oak looms, of woven artefacts that give life to elegant baskets made of reeds, wicker and rushes, important in the construction of phonic instruments of remote origin, the launeddas.
Leaving the village is the forest of Baccu Arrodas, a dense wood of Mediterranean scrub equipped for refreshment on long spring walks. At the marina of San Giovanni is the Torre dei Dieci Cavalli (called Torre de la Puerta by the Spaniards), a historic defensive building that represented the entrance route to the villages of Sarrabus.
The ‘Sagra degli Agrumi’ (Citrus Fruit Festival) is the most important event in the town and consists of an exhibition of the best local products and a parade of numerous folkloric groups from all over Sardinia.
