Elmas

Having become a fraction of Cagliari in 1937, the municipality of Elmas acquired autonomy in 1989. In its territory stands the modern airport named to Mario Mameli, the airport that handles the most passengers among the three main ‘gateways’ to Sardinia, just ten minutes from the centre of the capital. Also interesting for its history and architecture is the military airport, witness to the exploits of De Pinedo and Balbo in 1927. The large air force barracks is one of the most distinctive buildings with its helicoidal ramp for ascent and descent. Elmas is also home to the island’s most important printing centre.

Founded as a village of fishermen and farmers on the shores of the Cagliari pond (known as the Santa Gilla lagoon), its most attractive naturalistic expression where you can observe the flight of pink flamingos, the town today boasts almost ten thousand inhabitants and is constantly growing.
