Assemini

Assemini is a municipality of 26,000 located about 15 km from Cagliari.

It is the town of the ancient ceramics tradition, hosts the production facilities of the famous Ichnusa beer and is the training ground of the Cagliari Calcio team. The tradition of ceramics is deeply rooted in the territory and the first artefacts testifying to this craft date back to the period of the Punic domination of Sardinia. The permanent exhibition of Ceramic Art contains over 250 unique pieces of great value.

Like other centres in the area, it has preserved numerous examples of typical Campidanese houses, recognisable by their characteristic central courtyards and large loggias (called lollas), which are considered a heritage of great historical and cultural value.

In the culinary tradition, Assemini stands out for the uniqueness and originality of the ‘panada’, a unique dish consisting of a circular-shaped container of unleavened dough stuffed with meat (lamb or pork) and potatoes seasoned with saffron and olive oil or lard.

There are numerous summer events, such as the ‘Festa della Musica’, a meeting with musicians from various parts of the world. In the last ten days of July, the ‘Matrimonio Asseminese’ (Asseminese Wedding) takes place, in which the participants wear typical Sardinian costumes and express themselves entirely in Sardinian. Also in July, the ‘Festival Internazionale del Folklore’ is held.
